Role and Responsibilities
Conductor of the Performance: The Nattuvanar acts as the conductor, leading the dancers and ensuring synchronization with the music.
Master of Rhythm: They are responsible for maintaining the tala (rhythm) and providing the beats through vocalizations and cymbals.
Choreographer: Often, the Nattuvanar is also the choreographer, creating the dance sequences and ensuring they are performed correctly.
Interpreting the Music: They interpret the music and lyrics, conveying the emotional essence of the performance to the dancers.
Training and Skills
Extensive Knowledge: A Nattuvanar must have a deep understanding of classical music, rhythm, and dance.
Vocal Skills: Proficiency in vocalizing the rhythmic patterns is essential.
Physical Coordination: They require excellent coordination to effectively lead the dancers.

Significance in Bharathanatyam
The Nattuvanar is not just a facilitator but also an artist in their own right. The Nattuvanar’s expertise and guidance are fundamental to the success of any Bharathanatyam performance.
In modern times they are called as Guru.
They use a stick called Paratta Pirambu or Thattumanai made of bamboo or any other wood to teach.
Ancestors of the Tanjore Quartet were nattuvanar in the Tanjore court in the 17th Century.
