Jathi is a sequence of rhythmic syllables in a structured pattern recited by a Nattuvanar. It forms the backbone of the pure dance (nritta) segments, guiding the dancer’s footwork concluding with a sequence called a theermanam Example: "Tha Jam Thari Thaka Tha; Thaka Jam Thari Thaka Thai Tha Jam Thari Thaka Jam Thari Tha, Dhi, KTKTKTRKTtom" in Rupaka Chapu Talam

Jaathi
Jaathi is a time measure which dictates the number of beats assigned to a single rhythmic unit. There are 5 Jaathis: Tisram (3 beats): e.g., Tha Ki Ta Chatusram (4 beats): e.g., Tha Ka Dhi Mi Khandam (5 beats): e.g., Tha Ka Tha Ki Ta Mishram (7 beats): e.g., Tha Ki Ta Tha Ka Dhi Mi Sankeernam (9 beats): e.g., Tha Ka Dhi Mi Tha Ki Ta Tha Ka Dhi Mi Jaathi decides the value of Laghu.
