  • Jaathi is a time measure which dictates the number of beats assigned to a single rhythmic unit.

  • There are 5 Jaathis:


  1. Tisram (3 beats): e.g., Tha Ki Ta

  2. Chatusram (4 beats): e.g., Tha Ka Dhi Mi

  3. Khandam (5 beats): e.g., Tha Ka Tha Ki Ta

  4. Mishram (7 beats): e.g., Tha Ki Ta Tha Ka Dhi Mi

  5. Sankeernam (9 beats): e.g., Tha Ka Dhi Mi Tha Ki Ta Tha Ka Dhi Mi


Jaathi decides the value of Laghu. According to the value of the jaathi,Laghu will be called

  1. Jaathi= 3 counts, Trisra Laghu

  2. Jaathi = 4 counts,Chathusra Laghu

  3. Jaathi = 5 counts. Khanda Laghu

  4. Jaathi = 7 counts, Misra Laghu

  5. Jaathi = 9 counts, Sankeerna Laghu
