Karanas (A Basic introduction for Grade 5 preparing students)

  • The Sanskrit word Karana means "doing" or "action."

  • They are officially documented in the Natya Shastra (the ancient Indian treatise on performing arts written by Sage Bharata).

  • According to the Natya Shastra, a Karana is formed by the simultaneous combination of three elements:

    1. Nritta Hasta: Specific hand gestures.

    2. Chari: Movements of the lower body and legs.

    3. Sthana: The basic standing posture or torso position.

  • .There are exactly 108 Karanas described in the Natya Shastra.

  • They are not static poses; they are dynamic, fluid movements that connect one posture to another.

Names of the first 5 Karanas:

  1. Talapushpaputam

  2. Vartitam

  3. Valitoorukam

  4. Apaviddham

  5. Samanakam
